WEX Strengthens EV Charging Network with Key Partnerships

WEX expands EV charging payments in the U.S. via new partnerships with Lynkwell, Revel, and Ampcontrol.

Global commerce platform WEX has announced a significant expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging network through three strategic partnerships. These new collaborations are set to broaden WEX's reach and simplify the EV charging experience for fleet operators across the United States, marking another step forward in the company's commitment to supporting the transition to electric fleets.

Enhancing the Charging Ecosystem

The latest partnerships bring together WEX with prominent charging point operators Lynkwell and Revel, along with the innovative smart charging platform Ampcontrol. This strategic move, announced in a recent press release, is designed to integrate hundreds of additional charging stations into WEX's extensive network. Consequently, fleet operators utilizing WEX payment solutions will now have access to a wider array of charging options, facilitating smoother and more efficient operations for their electric vehicles.

Carlos Carriedo, Chief Operating Officer, Americas Payments and Mobility at WEX, highlighted the core benefits of these integrations. "By integrating our payment processing technology and syncing transaction details and RFID numbers from charging stations across multiple providers, we’re streamlining the EV charging experience and giving organizations the data they need to make smarter, more strategic operational decisions," Carriedo stated. This emphasis on data consolidation and simplified payment processing underscores WEX's understanding of the complexities faced by fleet managers in the evolving EV landscape.

A Comprehensive Approach to EV Charging

WEX's dedication to providing a holistic EV charging and payment solution is not new. In April, the company introduced WEX EV Depot, a feature specifically designed to enable fleets with electric vehicles to use their WEX Fleet Card at private charging stations. This addition was crucial in expanding WEX's offerings beyond public networks, acknowledging the diverse charging needs of commercial fleets.

With the successful implementation of WEX EV Depot, WEX now proudly offers a comprehensive EV charging and payment solution that covers all bases: depot, public, and at-home charging locations. This 360-degree approach is vital for fleet managers who are navigating the intricate process of transitioning from traditional internal combustion engines to electric vehicles.

Carriedo reiterated this commitment in an earlier press release, noting, "As fleet managers shift from internal combustion engines to EVs, they face the challenge of consolidating data across different types of chargers and fueling stations for operational efficiency. With WEX EV Depot, we are helping customers navigate the complexity of infrastructure rollout and giving them the tools to operate efficiently at scale with a 360-degree solution." This ongoing focus on efficiency and scalability remains a cornerstone of WEX's strategy.

Building on Past Successes

The latest partnerships build upon WEX's history of proactive engagement in the EV sector. In February, it was announced that Chargie’s electric vehicle charging stations would be seamlessly integrated with WEX’s fleet payment platform. Chargie, known for designing, installing, and supporting Level 2 and Level 3 EV charging solutions for both commercial and governmental sectors, brought valuable expertise to the collaboration. This integration allowed for the creation of an ecosystem that significantly simplifies EV fleet operations, enabling drivers to make secure, touchless payments with WEX charge cards while providing fleet operators with essential reports and invoices for effective analysis.

Further demonstrating its foresight, WEX also initiated a partnership with electric vehicle charger installation provider Qmerit in December 2024 (likely December 2023, given the publication context). This collaboration was strategically designed to streamline the installation of EV chargers at commercial fleet drivers’ homes, allowing these drivers the convenience of charging their work vehicles overnight. This initiative directly addresses a key logistical challenge for fleet managers: ensuring that drivers have reliable and accessible charging infrastructure wherever they operate, including at their residences.

The Future of Fleet Electrification

The collective impact of these partnerships and WEX's continuous innovation points towards a future where electric fleet management is more integrated, efficient, and data-driven. By addressing critical aspects such as payment processing, charging network accessibility, and infrastructure installation, WEX is actively contributing to the widespread adoption of EVs in commercial fleets. These efforts not only reduce operational complexities but also provide fleet managers with the necessary tools to make informed decisions, optimize their resources, and contribute to a more sustainable transportation future.

WEX's expanding network is a clear indicator of the growing momentum behind fleet electrification. As more businesses and government agencies transition to EVs, comprehensive solutions that simplify charging, payments, and data management will become indispensable. WEX, through its strategic alliances and innovative offerings, is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation, ensuring that its clients are well-equipped to navigate the challenges and harness the opportunities presented by the electric vehicle revolution.
